Successful Fundraiser at La Sirena – September 3, 2023
Exitosa recaudación de fondos en La Sirena – 3 de septiembre de 2023
On Sunday, September 3rd, 2023, Experience Puerto Morelos hosted a successful mural fundraiser called “A Night in Spain” at La Sirena in Puerto Morelos with the support of local artists. Over $37,000 pesos were raised that night to benefit the Puerto Morelos Mural Project and reef.

El domingo 3 de septiembre del 2023, Experience Puerto Morelos organizó con éxito un evento en beneficio del mural llamado “Una Noche en España” en La Sirena en Puerto Morelos con el apoyo de artistas locales. Esa noche se recaudaron más de $37,000 pesos para beneficiar al Proyecto del Mural Puerto Morelos y al arrecife. ¡Gracias a todos los que asistieron y colaboraron!
The event started on the rooftop with a unique Spain-themed tapas plate that La Sirena’s talented chef prepared especially for this event. There was even a vegan option for our plant-based friends! La Sirena also offered a delicious special sangria – it was a huge hit!
El evento comenzó en la azotea con un plato de tapas temáticas de España que el chef de La Sirena preparó especialmente para este evento. ¡Incluso hubo una opción vegana para nuestros amigos basados en plantas! La Sirena también ofreció una sangría nueva y deliciosa, ¡fue todo un éxito!
The CEO of XPM, Bridget Espinosa, was a great hostess and MC! She went from table to table explaining the Mural Project and ways that people can donate. 10% of all donations will go towards the reef regeneration project here in Puerto Morelos. More detailed information can be found here.

After everyone had eaten, the flamenco group Puerto Malix began playing, but they were abruptly interrupted by an unexpected deluge! Everyone quickly got out of the rain and down to the main stage below. The musicians and flamenco dancers did not let it rain on their parade and outdid themselves with a lively performance that felt even more intimate in the indoor location. They were captivating, energizing and captured the essence of Spain.
Después de que todos habían comido, el grupo de flamenco, Puerto Malix, comenzó a tocar, ¡pero fueron interrumpidos abruptamente por un aguacero inesperado! Todos salieron rápidamente de la lluvia y se dirigieron al escenario principal de abajo. While they were performing, Spanish artist Inés López let her creative juices flow by creating a live abstract painting. Several other local artists were also present with their artwork on display and available for purchase.

How can I get involved with the mural and help the reef?

Experience Puerto Morelos, together with our US counterpart Puente de Conexión which is a US-based 501c3 non-profit organization, continue to collect additional donations in order to make the mural a reality.
Each individual and business that makes a donation of $1000 pesos ($70 USD / $100 CAD) or more will have their name painted in the leaves of the mangrove on the mural. The larger the donation, the larger the name will appear. Donations in pesos can be made by cash. Donations in USD/CAD can be made via PayPal/credit card to Puente de Conexión.
Remember that 10% of what we raise will be going towards the regeneration of the reef here in Puerto Morelos, so donating to this project not only beautifies our town with the mural, but helps to ensure that the reef will continue to thrive for years to come.

Cada individuo y empresa que haga una donación de $1000 pesos ($70 USD / $100 CAD) o más tendrá su nombre pintado en las hojas del manglar en el mural. What does the mural design mean? ¿Qué significa el diseño del mural?
The objective of this mural project is to represent the spirit of Puerto Morelos, the coral reef and the mangrove. The spirit is guarded by two mystical guardians, one made by species from the sea and the other from species of the mangrove. They protect and keep this beautiful land safe, while offering a warm welcome to everyone visiting Puerto Morelos.
El objetivo de este proyecto es representar el espíritu de Puerto Morelos junto con el arrecife y el manglar. A sus lados, hay dos guardianes místicos, uno hecho de especies marinas y el otro de especies del manglar. Estos seres protegen y mantienen esta hermosa tierra segura, al tiempo que ofrecen una cálida bienvenida a todos los que visitan Puerto Morelos.
Who are the artists and sponsors?

Experience Puerto Morelos has been working closely with two local artisits who are organizing the Mural Project. Franco Werika is a well-known local muralist and Inés López is an artist and project manager from Spain who now calls Puerto Morelos home. Both of these talented artists have been involved in other successful murals you’re probably familiar with here in town, such as the reef mural under the southside bridge of the Federal 307 Highway, the mural at the new Alma Libre bookstore and the small mural on the Puerto Morelos Information Booth in the part on the portside of town. Where will the mural be located and why should I get involved?
¿Dónde estará ubicado el mural y por qué debería involucrarme?
The mural will be painted at the north facing external wall of Hostal Cuca Macuca, it will be 120 sqm in size (10m x 12m). It has a privileged location, being at the center of the main entry point for the beach side of the town. This spot is seen by at least 3,500 vehicles and 1,200 pedestrians a day. The project aims to beautify this public space while showcasing what it is to live in Puerto Morelos, the beauty of the coral reef, the mangrove, and some of the native animals that inhabit it. Furthermore, we are going to donate 10% of the funds raised to support projects aligned with the theme of the mural, in partnership with Puente de Conexión 501(c)3 and the Parque Nacional Arrecife Puerto Morelos.
By getting involved in this project not only you will get great exposure and recognition for your brand, you will also contribute to the creation of a high quality public space which delivers multiple benefits. Mural interventions in public spaces have shown to deliver an increase in tourism and between 5 to 50% increase in sales for local businesses. But most important of all, they allow communities to share their culture and identity.
El mural se pintará en la pared de 120 metros cuadrados (10 metros x 12 metros) en frente al OXXO, a la entrada de la zona del puerto. Tiene una ubicación privilegiada, ya que se encuentra en el centro del punto de entrada principal hacia el lado de la playa de la ciudad. Este lugar es visto por al menos 3,500 vehículos y 1,200 peatones al día. El proyecto tiene como objetivo embellecer este espacio público mientras muestra lo que significa vivir en Puerto Morelos, la belleza del arrecife de coral, el manglar y algunos de los animales nativos que lo habitan.
