Puerto Morelos is known for its laid-back charm, its reef, and its tight-knit community spirit.
But behind the postcard views, there’s another story worth telling — one about a small, community-run organization named Gaïa that has spent the last six years quietly transforming how local children and teens learn, grow, and see themselves.
Now, Gaïa is taking a bold next step with its new Inclusive Workshop program, and two community partners — Experience Puerto Morelos (XPM) and Puente de Conexión — are stepping up to help spread the word, connect volunteers, and rally donors both locally and internationally.

Who Is Gaïa, and Why Does Puerto Morelos Need Them?
Gaïa was born in the early days of the pandemic, when schools across Mexico closed their doors and families were left wondering what education would look like next. Rather than waiting for things to go “back to normal,” a group of Puerto Morelos community members decided to build something new: a free, non-directive learning space rooted in autonomy, self-regulation, and social-emotional growth.
Over six years, Gaïa welcomed an incredibly diverse mix of learners — world schoolers, unschoolers, homeschoolers, and children from many nationalities — including many with physical, cognitive, sensory, and social challenges, as well as neurodivergent children. What the Gaïa team discovered along the way was striking: many of these children, who had struggled or even faced discrimination in traditional classrooms, thrived when given an environment built around their individuality rather than a one-size-fits-all curriculum.
Puerto Morelos currently has no dedicated educational space for young people with disabilities or neurodivergent learners. Gaïa wants to change that — and that’s where the Inclusive Workshop comes in.
What Is the Gaïa Inclusive Workshop?
The Gaïa Inclusive Workshop is a practical, vocational learning program for teens ages 11 to 17 who are neurodivergent or living with disabilities. Instead of forcing students into conventional academic structures, Gaïa builds project-based workshops connected to real-life skills — the kind that build confidence, independence, and eventually, income.
Each workshop runs for nine months, broken into three three-month modules, with two two-hour sessions per week. Every student finishes with a community presentation of their final project, celebrating what they’ve built and learned.
Currenty the planned workshop offerings include:
- Sewing and tailoring
- Personal care
- Woodworking
- Cooking and kitchen skills
- Artistic expression
- Textile arts
- Creative writing
- Gardening and vegetable growing
The goals go far beyond a finished craft project. Gaïa is helping teens:
- Develop a positive sense of self
- Recognize their strengths, interests, and accomplishments
- Shape a life project rooted in freedom and dignity
- Gain real skills and confidence toward economic independence
It’s education designed not around limitation, but around potential.
The Scholarship Fund: Removing Financial Barriers
This kind of individualized, high-support education isn’t cheap to run — and the families who need it most are often the ones least able to afford it. That’s why Gaïa is raising $85,000 MXN (just under $5,000 USD at the exchange rate on 7/7/26) to fund four full scholarships and ten partial scholarships, opening the door for fourteen teens from low-income families to complete the full nine-month program regardless of their financial circumstances.
Scholarship funds go directly toward instructional hours, workshop materials, use of the learning space, community presentations, and the everyday operational costs of running a complete program.
Every peso donated is an investment in a young person being seen for their potential, not their limitations.
Beyond Money: What Gaïa Needs Right Now
Not everyone can donate cash, and that’s okay — Gaïa also needs hands-on help and physical supplies to keep its workshops running smoothly.
Materials needed:
- 10 chairs or benches sized for teenagers
- A computer desk
- A sewing machine table
- An electric oven or stove with a working oven
- Baking and cooking utensils
- Exterior paint
- Basic woodworking tools
Volunteers needed for:
- Building furniture, painting, basic repairs, and pest control
- Social media support, outreach, partnership development, graphic design, and digital marketing
